Can We Talk?

Hey folks,

You’re invited to spend an evening with me this holiday season – talking together about the remarkable results for children you made possible this year and our plans for the year ahead. For example:

Thanks to friends like you…

… a young girl in Japan is safe, secure and back in school

… a once-desperate East African mother sees her baby start to thrive

… a boy in Kentucky learns about healthy eating and exercise

… a sponsored child in El Salvador knows that someone truly cares

… and so much more.

Most important, I really want to hear from you – so please submit questions you have in the comments section below and then tune in on December 6 at 8pm EST. All you have to do is call 1-888-886-6603 and enter conference number: 17475

I look forward to a great conversation next Tuesday – among friends!

On behalf of the children,

Thank You.

    Hi Carolyn,

How do the automatic budget cuts to foreign aid affect your organization and other organization’s like it? How will you make up for the reduced funding from the U.S. government?

    Thanks for your time,

    Michael

There so much turmoil in some of the places Save the Children works. What are your plans for helping kids in troubled and war-torn countries in 2012?

    Carolyn,
Sometimes I have difficulties in thinking of creative topics and questions when I write to my sponsored child. I’ve seen some of the suggestions on the website and newsletters but is there a way to connect sponsors to share ideas?
    Thanks. Audrey

Hi Audrey and I always think about things I talk to my own kids about – like what they like this year about school ( or not…) , what their friends are up to, or what they are dreaming for these days. And I really like your idea of connecting sponsors with each other so they can share ideas too. Will look into that one! Thanks

We want to give a number of gifts from your Christmas catalog to relatives. How do you determine if a soccer ball, for example, really is purchased with the money we commit? thanks much for your wonderful organization

      Thanks for your question Bob,

Items in this catalog are representative of current Save the Children programs and your gift is a donation to our many programs, not necessarily to a specific project. This enables us to combine your gift with those of other caring donors to provide tangible solutions that help entire communities overcome poverty and achieve self-reliance.

Carolyn, if you were a member of Congress, what 3 or 4 legislative initiatives would you push and ask your constituents to support that would have, in your opinion, the greatest positive impact on the lives of children, both in the United States and globally? For example, I think meaningful Campaign Finance Reform legislation would free up our government to address issues related to children in need more impactfully. What would you push?

I like your answer Frank and there are so many things I think we could do but I’ll pick one- make sure kids get a basic education. I think if we focused both in the US and in our foreign aid policy on education and ensuring that every child got through elementary or primary school learning to read, write and do basic math, the world would be a drastically different place in a decade. In places like Haiti where only half the kids are in school and that half only gets to the 5th grade, a big push to focus US efforts on education would change the trajectory of the country. Hope to see it happen in my lifetime.

Why will the United States not ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and why does Save The Children not seem to care about this, as they ignored my email and pettition link concerning this.

Thanks so much for all your questions! Many were answered during our call in early December which you can link to above and listen to if you missed it. If you still have queries, please do get in touch and I’ll try to answer. I also thank the many above and on the phone who expressed support for Save the Children’s work. There is still much more to do but your support is really critical to all of us at Save the Children. Thank you!
    Carolyn
